I often get asked if I have a clear coat on the bare metal tank of my Honda CB750. The short answer is no.
Initially I had concerns about riding with a bare metal tank, such as rust issues from rain or condensation. However, I came across a product called GIBBS Brand Lubricant, which eliminates corrosion and helps waterproof metal surfaces. I decided to give it a shot and applied a light coat after stripping and sanding down the tank. That’s it, no clear coat or anything fancy.
Overall, I prefer this method because I’ve seen the tank age and gain a slight patina throughout the years. On occasion I get areas of rust, which I either leave or lightly sand off. The beautiful thing about a bare metal gas tank is that you get to control the wear and patina.
Keep in mind I don’t ride this bike in the rain if I can help it. So, if you plan to ride in the rain it might open the door for some rust.
Check out some GIBBS Brand Lubricant for yourself.
